At a glance
- PMDD can meet the ADA's definition of disability when it substantially limits a major life activity, like concentrating or regulating mood, but there's no automatic yes.
- FMLA can cover intermittent leave for PMDD if a doctor certifies it as a serious health condition and your employer has 50 or more employees.
- Common accommodations include flexible hours, remote work on the days before your period, a quieter space, extra breaks, and shifting deadlines around your cycle.
- The VA doesn't currently list PMDD as its own rated condition, so claims go through an existing gynecological or mood-related code.
- Track two cycles with a daily chart before you ask for formal accommodations. It turns 'I think this is PMDD' into evidence.
Is PMDD a disability?
PMDD isn't automatically a disability, and no single ruling decides that for everyone. In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) covers PMDD if it substantially limits a major life activity, something like concentrating, sleeping or regulating your mood, during the days it's active. Whether it qualifies is worked out case by case between you and your employer, guided by EEOC regulations.
General PMS usually doesn't meet that bar on its own, since it's common and typically mild. PMDD is different. It's a diagnosis in DSM-5-TR, with symptoms severe enough to disrupt work, relationships or daily function in the week before your period, easing within days of it starting.
PMDD causes real impairment. It affects an estimated 1.2% to 5% of women of reproductive age and brings significant suffering along with social, occupational and interpersonal impairment, according to a 2022 systematic review in Archives of Women's Mental Health.
The VA doesn't list PMDD as its own rated condition on the current disability schedule. If you're filing a VA claim, ask the rater how your documented symptoms might fit under an existing gynecological or mood-related code, and bring daily symptom records to support it.
A documented diagnosis changes what you're asking for. Without one, "I think this is PMDD" is a feeling you're describing. Getting a PMDD diagnosis backed by two cycles of daily tracking turns it into medical evidence an employer or VA rater can act on.
What PMDD work accommodations can you ask for?
Accommodations under the ADA just need to be reasonable, meaning they don't create undue hardship for your employer. Ask HR what's already available first. Some companies offer flexible or remote policies that don't require a diagnosis at all.
- Flexible start or end times on the days symptoms are at their worst
- Working from home for a set window each cycle, even just three or four days
- Swapping in-person meetings for calls or email in the days before your period
- A quiet space or extra breaks to step away during the day
- Shifting a deadline or redistributing a task, agreed on in advance
- Noise-canceling headphones or a quieter desk, if sound sensitivity is part of your pattern
None of these require explaining every symptom. Describing the accommodation and what it solves is usually enough, though a documented diagnosis makes the request harder to turn down.
How do you talk to your employer?
Walking in with a vague complaint rarely gets you anywhere. Walking in with one specific ask does.
- Decide what you're asking for before the meeting, something from the list above, not a general request for support.
- Bring documentation if you have it: a diagnosis letter, a DRSP chart you've filled in, or a doctor's note.
- Ask for a private conversation with your manager or HR, not a quick mention in passing.
- Say what you need, not just that you're struggling. Something like: "I have a diagnosed condition that affects my concentration and mood for about a week each month. I'd like to work from home on those specific days, and I can tell you which ones in advance."
- Follow up by email afterward, so there's a written record of what was agreed.
If your manager says no outright, ask what would need to change for a yes, and loop in HR before you escalate further.
Niyora is a PMS and PMDD support app. If you want help turning the week before your period into something you can say out loud, Moon lets you write down what happened, see it from another angle, and draft what to say, before you walk into that conversation.
What are your rights under the ADA, FMLA and UK law?
US and UK law use different tests, but both lean on documentation.
| Law | Where | What it covers | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADA | US | Reasonable accommodations if PMDD substantially limits a major life activity | A diagnosis and a specific accommodation request |
| FMLA | US | Up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year, often usable intermittently during the days before your period | A doctor's certification of a serious health condition |
| Equality Act 2010 | UK | Protection if a condition has a substantial, long-term adverse effect on daily life | Medical evidence of the pattern and its severity |
| VA disability rating | US, veterans | No PMDD-specific rating yet; claims go through existing codes | Documentation to support a claim under one of those codes |
FMLA applies if your employer has 50 or more employees and you've worked there at least 12 months and 1,250 hours. Below that threshold, you can still ask for an informal accommodation. You just won't have FMLA's legal backing.
In the UK, premenstrual conditions aren't automatically covered the way a long-term illness is. Under the Equality Act 2010, a condition counts as a disability if it has a substantial, long-term effect on daily life, a test severe, documented PMDD can meet. A PMDD diagnosis that follows DSM-5-TR criteria helps either case.
None of these laws require your employer to see your full medical record upfront, just enough documentation to support the specific request.
How do you plan work around your cycle?
Once you know your pattern, you can work with it instead of against it.
- Track symptoms for two cycles with a daily chart, so you know which days are consistently hardest
- Batch bigger asks, presentations, client calls, tense conversations, into your follicular and ovulation weeks
- Block lighter, heads-down work for the week before your period
- Tell one trusted colleague your general pattern, so there's backup if a day goes sideways
- Bring your tracked pattern to a doctor's visit if you're considering a formal accommodation or FMLA request
This takes two or three cycles to show a clear shape, so start before you need the data. If a specific day each cycle keeps causing problems at work, mark it before the next cycle starts, not after.
Pick one day this week to begin tracking. You'll have real evidence by the time you need to make a case, to your employer, a doctor, or the VA.

Why do some women experience mood changes linked to their menstrual cycle?
Evidence shows these women have normal hormone levels but heightened sensitivity in their brains and cells to hormone changes. This explains PMDD and some postpartum and perimenopausal mood problems, and has led to new treatments.

Questions people ask
Can you get disability for PMDD?+
PMDD can qualify as a disability under the ADA if it substantially limits a major life activity, like concentrating or regulating mood, during the week it's active. There's no automatic yes, so a documented diagnosis and a clear account of how symptoms affect your work make the case stronger.
Can you get FMLA for PMDD?+
PMDD can qualify for FMLA if a doctor certifies it as a serious health condition and your employer has 50 or more employees. FMLA gives up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave a year, and you can often take it intermittently during the days when symptoms feel most intense rather than all at once.
Is PMDD covered under the ADA?+
PMDD is covered under the ADA when it substantially limits a major life activity, decided case by case rather than automatically. A diagnosis under DSM-5-TR criteria and documentation of how symptoms affect your work, like two months of daily tracking, supports an ADA accommodation request.
Is there a PMDD VA disability rating?+
There's no PMDD-specific VA disability rating on the current schedule. If you're filing a VA claim, ask the rater how your documented symptoms might fit under an existing gynecological or mood-related code, and bring daily symptom records to support it.
What accommodations can I ask for with PMDD?+
Common PMDD accommodations include flexible hours, remote work on the days before your period, quieter workspaces, extra breaks, and shifting deadlines around your cycle. Accommodations work best when you request something specific, backed by a pattern you've tracked, rather than asking generally for support.
