# How to take saffron for PMDD: dosage and timing

• Most trials used 30 mg a day, split into two 15 mg doses (morning and evening). • It's been taken every day of the cycle or only in the luteal phase, with good results either way. • No trial has tested more than 30 mg a day, so that's the dose to stick with.

## At a glance

- Most saffron trials for PMS and PMDD used 30 mg a day, split into two 15 mg doses.
- Saffron has been taken every day (PMS trial) or only in the luteal phase (PMDD trial), with good results either way.
- No trial has tested doses above 30 mg a day, so there's no safety data on taking more.
- Saffron caused fewer side effects than fluoxetine in a head-to-head PMDD trial.
- The milligram dose doesn't change between PMS and PMDD, only the schedule and how long trials ran.

A handful of small randomized trials, plus a 2026 meta-analysis showing a moderate effect on PMS symptoms (SMD -0.64) [3], support saffron at 30 mg a day for PMS and PMDD. The largest single trial had 164 women [4], so results are promising but not yet backed by large, independent studies.

## How do you take saffron for PMDD, and how much?

The dose used in most saffron trials for PMS and PMDD is **30 mg a day**, split into two 15 mg capsules, one in the morning and one in the evening. That exact dose was used in a 2008 placebo-controlled trial for PMS and in a 2020 trial of 120 women comparing saffron with fluoxetine for PMDD [2, 5].

No trial has tested a higher daily dose for either condition, so there's no evidence that more than 30 mg helps, and no safety data on larger amounts.

| Trial | Condition | Dose | Schedule |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| BJOG, 2008 [5] | PMS | 30 mg/day (15 mg twice daily) | Every day, for two full cycles |
| Advanced Biomedical Research, 2020 [2] | PMDD | 30 mg/day (15 mg twice daily) | Luteal phase only, two cycles |

## Should you take saffron every day or only before your period?

Saffron has been tested on two different schedules. For PMS, one trial had women take it every day, across two full cycles [5]. For PMDD, a separate trial had the same 30 mg dose only in the luteal phase, the roughly two weeks between ovulation and a period, again for two cycles [2].

Both schedules showed real improvement, and no study has compared the two schedules for saffron directly. Timing has been studied more closely for SSRIs: a 2023 meta-analysis of SSRI trials for premenstrual syndromes found luteal-phase-only dosing worked about as well as taking the medication every day, with similar dropout rates [7]. That's SSRI data, not saffron, but it suggests timing may matter less than consistency.

- Daily dosing: simpler to stick with, tested for PMS over two cycles [5].

- Luteal-phase-only dosing: tested for PMDD, taken for about two weeks before a period, for two cycles [2].

Either way, saffron needs a few cycles before you'll know if it's helping. [How long does saffron take to work?](https://niyora.com/treatments/how-long-does-saffron-take-to-work/) covers what to expect, week by week.

## Can you take saffron every day for months at a time?

Yes, at least over the periods that have been studied. The PMS trial had women take 30 mg a day continuously for two cycles, roughly two months, without serious safety concerns [5]. A broader review of saffron trials across many conditions, not just PMS, described it as generally safe and tolerable [1].

What hasn't been tested is saffron use well beyond two or three months for PMS or PMDD specifically, especially alongside another medication.

Saffron's side effects in these trials were mild, and less frequent than fluoxetine's in the head-to-head PMDD trial [2]. For the full list of what people reported, see [saffron side effects, including mood](https://niyora.com/treatments/saffron-side-effects/).

## What happens if you take too much saffron?

Nobody knows, from the trials we have. Every saffron study for PMS or PMDD used 30 mg a day; none tested 45 mg, 60 mg or higher. So there's no trial evidence either way on whether more works better, or causes more side effects.

What the trials do show:

- Saffron at 30 mg a day caused fewer side effects than fluoxetine, 20 mg twice daily, in the head-to-head PMDD trial [2].

- A review of saffron across many conditions called it safe and tolerable at the doses studied, generally in this same range [1].

What's missing is any trial data on doses above 30 mg a day, or use beyond a few months, for PMS or PMDD specifically.

Until that data exists, the safest approach is to stick with the dose that's been tested, 30 mg a day, especially alongside other supplements or medications.

## Does the dose differ for PMS and PMDD?

Both trials used the same dose, **30 mg a day**, split into two 15 mg capsules. What differs is the condition and how it's diagnosed.

PMS covers physical and emotional symptoms in the week or two before a period that ease once it starts. PMDD is a specific diagnosis requiring at least five symptoms, including a mood symptom, confirmed with daily tracking over two cycles. [What is PMS? Premenstrual syndrome, explained](https://niyora.com/premenstrual-syndrome/) covers that distinction in full.

The PMDD trial ran on a tighter schedule, luteal phase only, while the PMS trial ran continuously [2, 5]. That timing difference may matter more than any difference in mg, since neither trial was designed to compare dose by condition directly. If you're not sure which pattern fits you, that's worth sorting out before picking a schedule. [Supplements for PMDD: what actually helps](https://niyora.com/treatments/supplements-for-pmdd/) covers saffron alongside other options people try.

## When should saffron use involve a doctor?

Saffron is an herbal supplement, not a regulated medication, and the trials behind it are small: the largest had 164 women [4]. SSRIs remain the guideline-recommended medication for PMDD, with the strongest evidence base of anything studied so far [6].

Before you add saffron:

- Ask a pharmacist about interactions, especially if you take other medications, including SSRIs.

- Pick one schedule, daily or luteal-phase-only, and stick with it for at least two cycles before judging whether it's working.

- Track your symptoms daily so you can tell if anything changed.

If you want somewhere to put what you're tracking, Niyora is a PMS and PMDD support app. It gives you an estimated PMS window, so you have a sense of when symptoms are due, and Moon, a place to write down what happened in a hard moment and see it from another angle.

When to see a doctor

If this takes a week of every month, or you have thoughts of hurting yourself, see a GP or gynecologist and bring two months of daily notes.

## Questions people ask

How much saffron should you take for PMS or PMDD?

+

Most trials used 30 mg of saffron a day, split into a 15 mg capsule in the morning and another in the evening. That's the dose tested in a 2008 PMS trial and a 2020 trial of 120 women with PMDD, and no higher dose has been studied for either condition.

Should saffron be taken daily or only before your period?

+

Saffron has been tested both ways: daily for two cycles in a PMS trial, and only during the luteal phase, the two weeks before a period, in a PMDD trial. Both schedules helped, and no trial has compared the two directly for saffron.

Is saffron as effective as fluoxetine for PMDD?

+

In a 2020 trial of 120 women with PMDD, saffron and fluoxetine both reduced symptoms by similar amounts, and saffron caused fewer side effects. It's one trial, though, so that's not enough evidence to swap one medication for the other on your own.

What happens if you take more than 30 mg of saffron a day?

+

No PMS or PMDD trial has tested doses above 30 mg a day, so there's no safety or effectiveness data on taking more. Stick to the dose that's actually been studied, and talk to a pharmacist or doctor before increasing it.

Can you take saffron long term for PMS or PMDD?

+

Trials have only run for about two menstrual cycles at a time, so longer use for PMS or PMDD specifically hasn't been directly tested, even though reviews of saffron across other conditions call it generally safe and tolerable. Treat that two-cycle mark as the edge of what's actually been tested.
