# Melatonin for period insomnia: what it is and whether it helps

Melatonin is the hormone that sets your sleep-wake cycle. The one small trial testing it for period-related sleep found it sped up sleep onset but cut into deep sleep, so evidence it fixes period insomnia is still thin. Research on PMDD mood and light exposure is more developed than research on melatonin pills themselves, and no guideline sets a standard dose for period insomnia.

## At a glance

- Melatonin is the hormone that controls your sleep-wake cycle, also sold as an over-the-counter sleep supplement.
- Women with PMDD show measurably different melatonin timing in the luteal phase than women without the condition.
- Timed light exposure that shifts melatonin's rhythm earlier has shown more mood improvement in small trials than melatonin pills alone.
- No guideline sets a standard melatonin dose for period insomnia or PMDD; research doses ranged from 2 mg to 10 mg for different goals.
- Common side effects are next-day grogginess, headache and vivid dreams, and it can interact with other medications you may be taking.

Small trials and one five-person cohort show melatonin's timing differs in PMDD and that light exposure shifting it earlier can lift mood, but a 2022 review called melatonin a potential remedy that is "not ready" for routine recommendation in PMS or PMDD.

## What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone your brain releases as light fades, telling your body it's time to wind down. Levels rise in the evening, peak overnight and drop again near morning, setting the rhythm for when you feel sleepy and when you feel alert. You can also buy it as an over-the-counter pill, usually taken before bed to help you fall asleep faster.

In PMDD, that rhythm doesn't always look the same as it does in women without the condition.

One study found that during the luteal phase, melatonin started later, lasted for a shorter window and reached lower overall levels than it did in the follicular phase, a shift not seen in women without PMDD in the same study (Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1997).

**That timing difference is part of why researchers have studied melatonin for premenstrual symptoms at all.**

If you already deal with poor sleep most months, that's not something to push away. It's one more sign your body is reacting to the hormonal shifts before your period, even if the mechanism isn't fully mapped yet.

## What is melatonin used for?

Doctors and sleep specialists most often recommend melatonin for:

- Jet lag, to reset your clock after crossing time zones

- Shift work, when your schedule fights your body's natural rhythm

- Delayed sleep phase, when you fall asleep and wake up later than you'd like

- Short-term insomnia, to help you fall asleep faster on a given night

It isn't approved as a treatment for PMS or PMDD themselves. Interest in melatonin for period-related sleep comes from how common insomnia is before a period.

In one study of women with a confirmed PMDD diagnosis, insomnia, poor attention and fatigue were all worse in the luteal phase than the follicular phase (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021). In a separate group of student nurses, women with insomnia were almost four times more likely to report PMS symptoms (Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2025).

That link between poor sleep and premenstrual symptoms is why melatonin, as a sleep aid, gets mentioned for this specific week, not because anyone has proven it treats PMS or PMDD mood symptoms directly.

## Does melatonin help PMS or PMDD?

It might help sleep a little, and the evidence for mood is thinner and mixed.

Most research has tested either melatonin pills or light exposure that shifts your body's own melatonin rhythm, which are not the same intervention:

| Study | What it tested | What it found | Evidence strength |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cohort, n=5 (Sleep, 2021) | 2 mg slow-release melatonin nightly, three luteal phases | Faster sleep onset and less deep sleep; mood wasn't clearly improved | Limited |
| RCT, n=44 (Archives of Women's Mental Health, 2023) | A week of timed light and sleep exposure shifting melatonin earlier | Mood scores improved more than with the opposite timing | Moderate |
| RCT, n=21 (Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1997) | Morning versus evening light therapy in PMDD | Morning light shifted melatonin earlier, confirming PMDD's altered rhythm | Limited |
| Review (Frontiers in Endocrinology, 2022) | Overall evidence for melatonin in PMS | Called melatonin a potential remedy, but said it isn't ready for routine recommendation | Limited |

**The strongest evidence comes from timing light exposure to shift melatonin's natural rhythm earlier in the evening, not from a melatonin pill**, which improved mood more than shifting it later. ## How much melatonin should you take?

There's no agreed dose for period insomnia or PMDD specifically. Studies that tested melatonin used different amounts for different goals:

- 2 mg, slow-release, about an hour before bed, for three menstrual cycles, in a small PMDD sleep study (Sleep, 2021)

- 10 mg, given at a fixed daytime hour, in a study of simulated jet lag and mood, not period symptoms (Journal of Pineal Research, 1999)

- No pill at all: a week of timed light exposure designed to shift melatonin's rhythm earlier (Archives of Women's Mental Health, 2023)

Over-the-counter products vary widely in strength. **No guideline sets a standard dose for this use**, so starting low makes more sense than copying a research dose.

## What are melatonin's side effects?

Most people tolerate melatonin well. Side effects, when they happen, are usually mild:

- Grogginess the next morning, especially at higher doses

- Headache or dizziness

- Vivid dreams or restless sleep

- Mild stomach upset

If you feel foggy during the day after taking it, the dose may be too high, or taken too late in the evening. That's worth mentioning to whoever recommended it rather than pushing through a groggy week on top of a hard one. None of the melatonin studies in women with PMDD reported serious side effects, but the trials were small and short, so rarer effects wouldn't necessarily show up.

## Is melatonin safe with other medications?

Melatonin can interact with several common medications:

- Blood thinners like warfarin

- Medication that suppresses the immune system

- Diabetes medication, since melatonin can affect blood sugar

- Some blood pressure medication

If you take an SSRI or hormonal contraception for PMDD, melatonin isn't known to interact directly, but it's still worth mentioning to whoever manages that treatment.

If poor sleep or mood symptoms are costing you a week of most months, see a GP or gynecologist and bring two months of daily notes, something a [DRSP chart](https://niyora.com/tools/drsp-chart/) makes easy to build.

A [PMDD specialist](https://niyora.com/care/pmdd-specialist/) can weigh melatonin against options with stronger evidence behind them, and our [research library](https://niyora.com/research/) has the full studies if you want to read further.

## Questions people ask

Does melatonin help with PMDD mood symptoms?

+

Melatonin's effect on PMDD mood symptoms is still unclear. Melatonin rhythms differ in PMDD (Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1997), and a 2023 trial found mood improved when light exposure shifted that rhythm earlier (Archives of Women's Mental Health), but a 2022 review called melatonin a potential remedy that isn't ready for routine use (Frontiers in Endocrinology).

What is the best time to take melatonin for period insomnia?

+

Studies testing melatonin for premenstrual sleep gave it about an hour before bed, during the luteal phase only. There's no established best time for period insomnia specifically, so timing should come from whoever recommends it to you.

Can melatonin make PMS worse?

+

There's no evidence melatonin worsens PMS. But the wrong dose or timing can leave you groggy the next day, which can make the days before your period feel even more draining. If sleep gets worse after starting it, stop and tell a doctor.

Is it safe to take melatonin every night before my period?

+

The studies on melatonin and premenstrual symptoms lasted three cycles at most, so nightly long-term use before a period hasn't been well studied.

How does melatonin compare to other PMS sleep aids like curcumin?

+

Curcumin, tested for PMS-related insomnia, showed no real benefit over placebo in one trial. Melatonin has more research behind it for premenstrual sleep, though results are still small-scale and mixed rather than clearly positive.
