# Libido changes before your period: why it happens and what helps

An increase or decrease in libido before your period is common, driven by the sharp drop in estrogen and progesterone in the final days of your cycle. Both directions are normal and usually ease once bleeding starts. If a late period makes the change feel different, that's a better reason to test for pregnancy than the libido shift on its own.

Builds after ovulation, peaks in the days before your period, and eases once bleeding starts.

## At a glance

- Libido can rise or fall in the days before your period, both are common and tied to the same drop in estrogen and progesterone.
- The shift usually starts in the luteal phase and peaks 5 to 10 days before your period, easing once bleeding starts.
- A late period plus a different-feeling libido change is a better reason to test for pregnancy than the libido change alone.
- Libido isn't a required symptom for a PMDD diagnosis, but it often travels alongside the mood symptoms that are.
- Tracking the date next to how you feel for two cycles turns a vague impression into a pattern you can describe to a doctor.

Direct research isolating premenstrual libido change is sparse. Most evidence comes from broader luteal-phase and PMDD studies on mood, stress and physical reactivity rather than sexual desire specifically.

## Why does your sex drive change before your period?

Your sex drive can rise or fall in the days before your period. Estrogen and progesterone fall sharply as your cycle ends, and both hormones affect brain regions tied to mood and motivation. **The drop doesn't affect everyone the same way.**

- Falling estrogen can loosen its usual check on desire, so interest rises for some women.

- The same drop can bring fatigue, irritability or a lower mood for others, lowering desire instead.

- Progesterone rises through the luteal phase, then falls fast right before bleeding. Its sedating effect can blunt desire on its own for many women.

Research on PMDD finds that some brains react more strongly to this same hormone drop, not because their hormone levels are abnormal (Schmidt et al., 1998, NEJM; Dubey et al., 2017, Molecular Psychiatry). Whether that same variability extends to desire hasn't been studied directly, so this is an open question rather than a settled finding.

## How many days before your period does it start?

For most women, a shift in libido begins in the luteal phase, the one to two weeks between ovulation and your period. It tends to become most noticeable in the days right before bleeding starts, the same window when other PMS symptoms usually peak.

**The exact timing varies by person and by cycle length.** Tracking the date against when your period actually arrives, over two or three cycles, is the only reliable way to see your own pattern.

Niyora is a PMS and PMDD support app. It gives you an estimated PMS window so you can see at a glance whether this week fits your usual timing, without creating an account. You can use the [PMS calculator](https://niyora.com/tools/pms-calculator/) for the same quick estimate.

Right now

If this is happening to you right now

- 1 Count back from your expected period. If you're in the days right before it's due, this is a normal luteal-phase pattern, not something to fix.
- 2 If you have a partner, say the plain version: "I want more sex this week" or "don't take it personally if I'm not interested." Guessing wastes the window.
- 3 If the change feels sudden and your period is late, take a pregnancy test before assuming it's hormonal.
- 4 Write down today's date and how you feel next to it. Two cycles of notes will show you whether this is a pattern or a one-off.
- 5 If desire has swapped for irritability or tears, give the feeling the same 20 minutes you'd give any other PMS symptom. It doesn't need a reason to be real.

## Is a libido change before your period normal?

Yes. A shift in desire, in either direction, is one of the many ways PMS shows up, alongside bloating, breast tenderness and mood changes. It isn't a required symptom for a PMDD diagnosis, but changes in interest often travel with the mood and energy symptoms that are part of the criteria.

PMDD requires, in the final week before your period (DSM-5-TR):

- At least five symptoms total

- At least one mood symptom

- Symptoms that ease within a few days of bleeding starting

- Minimal symptoms the week after

A libido change on its own, without other symptoms interfering with your life, doesn't point to PMDD.

**What matters more than the direction of the change is whether it's new, repeats every cycle, and eases once your period starts.** If it does all three, hormones are a reasonable explanation. For the broader picture, see [what is PMS](https://niyora.com/premenstrual-syndrome/).

## Is it PMS or early pregnancy?

Both PMS and early pregnancy can raise or lower desire, and both can come with sore breasts, fatigue and mood swings. That overlap is why the two get confused.

| Sign | PMS | Early pregnancy |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Libido change | Common, either direction | Can occur, either direction |
| Breast tenderness | Common | Common |
| Fatigue | Common | Common |
| Mood swings | Common | Common |
| Period | Arrives on schedule | Doesn't arrive |
| Timing | Eases once period starts | Continues past expected period |

**The clearest marker is timing.**

If your period is late and the change feels different from your usual premenstrual pattern, a pregnancy test is a faster answer than reasoning from symptoms alone. See [PMS or pregnant](https://niyora.com/conditions/pms-or-pregnant/) for the other overlapping signs and when to test.

If your period arrives on schedule and the change fades with it, you're looking at a normal premenstrual pattern, not pregnancy.

## How does it connect to PMS mood changes?

Desire doesn't move on its own. It sits next to the same hormone shifts that drive PMS mood symptoms, and the two often rise and fall together across your cycle:

- Irritability

- Tearfulness

- Anxiety

**Researchers have found heightened reactivity in the luteal phase** on measures unrelated to sex directly, such as the startle reflex, a quick, automatic response to a sudden noise (Neuropsychopharmacology, 2008; Psychoneuroendocrinology, 2011). These studies didn't measure desire itself, so whether it moves in step with mood is still an open question.

If your libido changes tend to land in the same days as your irritability or low mood, that's not a coincidence. See luteal phase libido changes for the timing, and [start with what you're feeling](https://niyora.com/pms/) for the mood side on its own.

## When should you see a doctor?

A change in desire before your period, on its own, rarely needs medical attention. It's worth a closer look when it comes bundled with other symptoms that are hard to manage week after week.

**Bring two months of daily notes before you go.** Include:

- The days your libido shifted

- How you felt each day

- Any other symptoms you noticed

That record helps a GP or gynecologist tell PMS from PMDD, or from another condition that gets worse before your period.

Treatment, when it's needed, might include:

- SSRIs (some taken only in the luteal phase)

- Certain hormonal contraceptives

- CBT

A doctor decides what fits your situation. This page is about understanding the pattern, not treating it.

When to see a doctor

If this takes a week of every month, or you have thoughts of hurting yourself, see a GP or gynecologist and bring two months of daily notes.

## What does the research say?

Direct research on premenstrual libido changes is thinner than you'd expect, given how often women report it. Most of what we know comes from studies on the luteal phase more broadly.

That broader research points to hormone-sensitive systems, including mood, stress response and even the startle reflex, behaving differently in the week before a period for some women (Neuropsychopharmacology, 2008; Psychoneuroendocrinology, 2011).

A large 2023 survey of over 4,000 women found that higher perceived stress was linked to more reported menstrual cycle disturbances (Women's Health, 2023). That doesn't prove stress changes libido specifically, but it's a reminder that what's happening in your life and your cycle aren't separate.

PMDD itself affects **about 1.6% of women and girls in community studies with a confirmed diagnosis, 3.2% across all studies with a confirmed diagnosis, and 7.7% when the diagnosis was provisional** (Reilly et al., 2024, Journal of Affective Disorders). Most libido changes before a period sit outside that range, as a normal, variable part of PMS rather than a diagnosis. See [libido changes during your period](https://niyora.com/symptoms/libido-during-period/) for what happens once bleeding starts.

## Research on libido

42 studies in the library look at libido in PMS and PMDD. They were published from 1981 to 2026, and each one has a short summary of what was tested and found.

Daily continuous use appears more effective than taking SSRIs only before your period.Strong study design](https://niyora.com/research/papers/selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitors-for-premenstrual-syndrome-and-2024/)
- [Randomised trial, 2008Does the antidepressant escitalopram taken only during the luteal phase reduce PMDD symptoms?Yes. Escitalopram taken at 20 mg daily during the luteal phase only reduced core PMDD symptoms by 90%, much more than placebo. 80% of women had an 80% or greater reduction in irritability compared to 30% on placebo.Strong study design](https://niyora.com/research/papers/escitalopram-administered-in-the-luteal-phase-exerts-a-marked-and-dose-dependent-2008/)
- [Randomised trial, 2005Does fluoxetine improve sexual drive and desire in women with PMDD?Fluoxetine showed a trend toward improving sexual drive compared to placebo, though the difference wasn't statistically significant. ## Questions people ask

Can PMDD cause low libido instead of high?

+

Yes. PMDD can lower libido for some women and raise it for others, since it isn't a required symptom in DSM-5-TR, just a common companion to the mood and energy symptoms that are. The direction a woman experiences, and whether it even happens, differs from person to person and sometimes cycle to cycle.

Does libido usually rise before ovulation or before a period?

+

Many women notice a rise in desire around ovulation, when estrogen peaks, separate from the premenstrual window this page covers. A separate rise or fall before your period, in the luteal phase, comes from the later hormone drop and can move in either direction, unlike the more consistent ovulation-time increase.

Is a sudden rise in libido a sign of pregnancy?

+

A libido change alone isn't a reliable pregnancy sign either way. Early pregnancy can raise or lower desire, much like PMS, so the better marker is a missed period. If your period is late and your usual premenstrual libido pattern feels different this cycle, a pregnancy test gives a faster answer than guessing.

Should I track libido changes alongside my mood?

+

Tracking libido next to mood, energy and the date helps you see whether the three move together across your cycle, which is useful information for you and for a doctor. Two cycles of notes turn a vague impression into a pattern you can actually describe and act on.
