# Self-compassion: what it means

Self-compassion means responding to a hard moment with the same patience and understanding you'd offer a friend, instead of harsh self-criticism. Research in PMS and PMDD links it to easier premenstrual weeks, though it's a coping idea, not a treatment.

## At a glance

- Self-compassion means responding to a hard moment with the same patience you'd offer a friend, instead of harsh self-criticism.
- A 2026 study of 261 women found self-compassion partly explains why negative attitudes toward periods are linked to worse PMS symptoms.
- Another 2026 study found self-compassion, along with mindfulness skills, softens how much stress turns into premenstrual symptoms.
- It's a coping idea, not a treatment, for PMS or PMDD, useful alongside whatever a doctor recommends.

## What is self-compassion?

**Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same patience and understanding you'd offer a friend** who's struggling, instead of harsh self-criticism. Researchers usually break it into three parts:

- Noticing that something is hard right now, rather than brushing past it.

- Responding with kindness instead of judgment.

- Remembering that other people struggle with similar moments too, not just you.

Self-compassion describes how you respond to a hard moment, including one tied to your cycle, rather than a diagnosis or symptom itself. On a night when you're crying and can't say why, a self-compassionate response sounds more like "this is hard right now" than "what's wrong with me."

## How does it relate to PMS and PMDD?

In the week or two before a period, estrogen and progesterone drop, and some brains react to that drop with:

- Mood swings

- Irritability

- A low mood

Read more about [the luteal phase](https://niyora.com/luteal-phase/) and what's shifting in your body during this window.

That drop doesn't create a harsh inner voice on its own, but if you're already quick to blame yourself on an ordinary day, premenstrual symptoms can bring that voice forward faster and louder. [What causes PMDD](https://niyora.com/questions/what-causes-pmdd/) looks at why some people react more strongly to these normal hormone changes.

How you talk to yourself in that moment doesn't cause PMDD, but it does shape how the moment feels while you're inside it.

## What does the research say?

Two recent studies looked at self-compassion in premenstrual syndrome, and one of them also looked at PMDD. A 2026 study in Archives of Women's Mental Health surveyed 261 women and found self-compassion partly explained why negative attitudes toward periods were linked to worse PMS symptoms. Women who were harder on themselves and viewed their cycle more negatively reported more symptoms overall [2].

A second 2026 study in Psychology and Psychotherapy surveyed 228 women retrospectively and a separate group of 90 prospectively, and found self-compassion, together with mindfulness skills, moderated how much stress turned into premenstrual symptoms, not whether the stress happened at all [1].

Neither study tested self-compassion as a stand-alone treatment. Both point to it as one factor, alongside stress, that shapes how rough a premenstrual week feels.

If you want somewhere to write down what happened on a hard night without extra judgment, Niyora is a PMS and PMDD support app. Its Moon feature lets you note what happened, see it from another angle, calm down, and draft a reply you can hold onto before you send anything you can't take back.

When to see a doctor

If premenstrual symptoms take over a week every month, or you have thoughts of hurting yourself, see a GP or gynecologist and bring two months of daily notes.

## What related terms should you know?

These terms often come up alongside self-compassion when people search for ways to make premenstrual days easier:

- Luteal phase: the second half of the cycle, when estrogen and progesterone fall and most PMS and PMDD symptoms show up. See [the luteal phase](https://niyora.com/luteal-phase/).

- PMDD: premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR that needs five symptoms, at least one mood-related, confirmed by two months of daily tracking. See [PMDD explained](https://niyora.com/pmdd/).

- What causes PMDD: current thinking on why some brains react more strongly to normal hormone changes before a period. See [what causes PMDD](https://niyora.com/questions/what-causes-pmdd/).

For a wider look at what's been studied in this space, see [PMS and PMDD research, summarised](https://niyora.com/research/). Next time you're hard on yourself before your period, try naming the moment as hard before you judge it.

## Research on low mood

1,946 studies in the library look at low mood in PMS and PMDD. They were published from 1964 to 2026, and each one has a short summary of what was tested and found.

## Questions people ask

Does self-compassion treat PMDD?

+

Self-compassion doesn't treat PMDD. Guidelines recommend SSRIs (sometimes used only in the days before a period), certain hormonal contraceptives, and CBT, with a doctor deciding what fits. Self-compassion is a way of responding to a hard moment, not a replacement for treatment, though research links it to easier premenstrual weeks.

Why am I so hard on myself in the days before my period?

+

Estrogen and progesterone drop in the week or two before a period, and some brains react to that drop with irritability, low mood, or anxiety. That drop doesn't create self-criticism on its own, but it can make an already-harsh inner voice louder and quicker to show up.

Can self-compassion reduce PMS symptoms?

+

Research links self-compassion to lower PMS severity. A 2026 study of 261 women found it partly explains why negative attitudes toward periods predict worse symptoms, and a separate study found it buffers how much stress turns into premenstrual symptoms. It hasn't been tested as a stand-alone treatment.

What's the difference between self-compassion and self-pity?

+

Self-compassion means noticing a hard moment is hard, without exaggerating it or shutting it out. Self-pity tends to dwell on the difficulty alone, as though no one else goes through it. Self-compassion includes remembering other people have hard moments in the days before their period too.
